SENSEX, NIFTY ENTER SAMVAT 2083 AFTER<BR>SEVEN CONSECUTIVE SESSIONS OF GAINS

Published on Nov 08, 2026 13:30

Indian equity markets will mark the beginning of Samvat 2083 with a special Muhurat trading session on Sunday, November 8, 2026. The BSE and NSE will remain open for the customary Diwali trading session, with continuous trading in the equity cash segment scheduled from 2:20 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Institutional Flows

Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remained net buyers of Indian equities, purchasing shares worth Rs 13,749.82 crore on November 6, 2026. Domestic institutional investors (DIIs), meanwhile, were net sellers to the tune of Rs 5,968.70 crore, according to provisional exchange data.

FPIs recorded net purchases of Rs 38,518.57 crore in November through November 6. This marks a shift from the heavy selling seen in the previous two months, when foreign investors offloaded equities worth Rs 48,082.27 crore in October and Rs 45,536.89 crore in September 2026.

Global Markets

US equity futures indicated a cautious start to the next trading session. Dow futures were lower, while global investors continued to assess the outlook for technology stocks, artificial intelligence-related investments and US monetary policy.

US markets ended Friday`s session on a mixed note as technology shares recovered from the previous session`s sharp losses. The S&P 500 advanced 0.31% to 7,376.86, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 1.09% to 24,579.43. In contrast, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.46% to 51,285.73.

The recovery was largely driven by semiconductor stocks. The Philadelphia Semiconductor Index surged 4.2%, with Nvidia rising 2.8% and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) jumping 11%. Sandisk also recovered nearly 4%.

Technology shares rebounded as investors reassessed concerns over tighter AI regulations following the US midterm elections. Fears that increased regulatory scrutiny could delay data-centre expansion had contributed to the previous session`s sharp sell-off. However, questions remain over the sustainability of AI-related capital expenditure and the elevated valuations of technology companies.

Among individual stocks, Airbnb surged 12% after raising its full-year 2026 revenue growth forecast on the back of stronger third-quarter demand. DraftKings, however, plunged 21% after lowering its outlook to account for higher expenses linked to the expansion of its prediction-markets business.

US Employment Data and Interest Rate Outlook

The US labour market showed stronger-than-expected growth in October, with non-farm payrolls increasing by 165,000 against market expectations of 65,000. September`s job additions were revised upwards to 60,000 from the earlier reported figure of 29,000. The unemployment rate also eased to 4.1% from 4.2% in September.

Average hourly earnings rose 0.4% month-on-month and 3.1% year-on-year to $38.00. The stronger employment figures pointed to continued resilience in the US labour market and reinforced concerns that the Federal Reserve may keep interest rates elevated for longer.

Crude oil prices edged lower on Friday after recovering earlier in the week. Brent crude futures were trading around $97.76 per barrel.

Domestic Market Performance

Indian benchmark indices extended their winning streak to a seventh consecutive session on Friday, showing resilience despite a sharp sell-off in global technology stocks. Strong foreign institutional investor inflows, the rupee`s recovery to a six-month high and expectations of softer crude oil prices supported domestic market sentiment.

Foreign investors purchased Indian equities worth Rs 14,975 crore on Thursday, marking their largest single-day buying activity in nearly six years. The rupee`s appreciation to 93.90 against the US dollar further strengthened investor confidence, while optimism ahead of Diwali added to the positive sentiment.

The Nifty closed above the 25,000 mark, supported largely by gains in private banking stocks, while media shares witnessed declines.

The S&P BSE Sensex surged 1,718.01 points, or 2.17%, to settle at 81,028.02. The Nifty 50 advanced 493.75 points, or 2.01%, to close at 25,030.35.

Over the seven consecutive trading sessions, the Sensex and Nifty gained 10.62% and 10.27%, respectively, reflecting a strong recovery in domestic equities ahead of the start of Samvat 2083.
