A Demat account (short for “dematerialised account”) is an account used to hold financial securities such as shares, bonds, mutual funds, and ETFs in an electronic format. It removes the need for physical share certificates and helps reduce risks such as loss, damage, or forgery.
At ICICI Direct, a Demat account works in combination with a trading account and a bank account. When you buy shares, the transaction is executed through your trading account, funds are debited from your ICICI Bank account, and the shares are credited to your Demat account. When you sell shares, the securities are debited from your Demat account, and the funds are credited back to your bank account.
This electronic system allows investors to track, manage, and transact in securities efficiently.
A Demat account and a trading account are both required for stock market transactions but serve different purposes:
A Demat account stores your investments such as shares, bonds, and ETFs in electronic form
A Trading account is used to place buy and sell orders on stock exchanges
At ICICI Direct, these accounts are connected so that transactions can be executed and settled efficiently.
If you’re looking to apply for demat account, ICICI Direct offers multiple account types based on your profile and needs:
Regular Demat Account: For resident Indian investors (Regular Demat Account / Basic Services Demat Account for small holdings)
NRI Demat Accounts:
Repatriable (linked to NRE account)
Non-repatriable (linked to NRO account)
Each option is designed to support different investment needs while enabling electronic holding of securities.
Any Indian resident over the age of 18 years that is currently residing in India can open a Demat Account with ICICI Direct.
Yes, Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) can open Demat account online in India with ICICI Direct under a 3-in-1 structure linked to an NRE or NRO bank account.
Key requirements include:
Valid passport, PAN, and address proof

Certain investment restrictions may apply based on regulatory guidelines.
