Media reports indicate Disney, Viacom18 win IPL broadcast, digital rights, respectively
News: As per Mint, Disney (Star) won the coveted Indian Premier League (IPL) Indian subcontinent TV rights for a whopping Rs 23,575 crore while Viacom18 grabbed the digital rights with a bid of Rs 20,500 crore. Another Rs 1700 crore was a bid for Package C, which has a select non-exclusive digital rights deal (double headers and playoff matches).
Views: We note that with challenge in viewership growth and ability to increase subscription rates, the bid prima facie seems aggressive, especially in the TV broadcasting segment. On the other hand, higher bid amount (~2.8x of last cycle bid), implies more than doubling of IPL revenues for franchises including our coverage company Sun TV.
