News: Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders has signed an MoU with National Shipbuilding & Heavy Industries Park Maharashtra Ltd (NSHIPML) to participate as the anchor shipyard in the proposed greenfield shipbuilding cluster at Dighi, Raigad. MDL plans to invest approximately ₹15,000 crore in the facility, targeting annual shipbuilding capacity of at least 1.2 million GT, with the project focused on construction of large commercial vessels. The overall Dighi cluster is estimated at ~₹27,500 crore and is expected to create a broader maritime manufacturing and supply-chain ecosystem

View: The project is strategically positive for MDL as it marks a significant expansion from its established warship and submarine construction business into large-scale commercial shipbuilding, while materially increasing its long-term capacity. The proposed 1.2 million GT annual capacity would provide MDL with a sizeable platform to participate in the growing global commercial shipbuilding market, alongside its existing defence order pipeline. Importantly, the project is being developed under the Centre’s Greenfield Shipbuilding Cluster Development Plan and is aligned with Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, providing policy support for the expansion

Impact: Positive
