Leadership churn takes centre stage across private banks

ICICIdirect Research 04 Sep 2026 DISCLAIMER

Leadership transitions remained a key theme across private banks during the week, with developments at HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Ujjivan SFB putting succession planning firmly in focus.
At HDFC Bank, MD & CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan has decided not to seek reappointment and will retire on October 26, 2026, prompting the Board to fast-track the succession process. Deputy MD Kaizad Bharucha is reportedly being considered as an internal candidate, while the bank is also evaluating an external candidate. Given the limited transition window and recent governance overhang, a credible and timely appointment remains important for restoring leadership stability and investor confidence.
At Kotak Mahindra Bank, succession appears relatively more advanced, with Anup Saha and Paritosh Kashyap reportedly submitted to RBI as internal candidates to succeed Ashok Vaswani, whose tenure ends on December 31, 2026. An internal appointment could ensure greater continuity and minimise disruption to the bank’s ongoing growth strategy.
Meanwhile, Ujjivan SFB saw an unexpected leadership change after MD & CEO Sanjeev Nautiyal sought early retirement on health grounds. RBI has approved Executive Director Carol Furtado as interim MD & CEO for three months or until a permanent successor takes charge, while the Board initiates its search. Importantly, management has reiterated its FY27 guidance, suggesting limited near-term disruption to business momentum.
