JSW Group has launched AMPSTAR, its electric commercial-vehicle brand

News: According to media sources, JSW Group has launched AMPSTAR, its electric commercial-vehicle brand, through JSW Greentech, with a stated ambition to sell 1 lakh electric trucks and buses annually by 2030 and become one of India’s top three commercial-vehicle makers. The immediate focus is on heavy commercial vehicles, beginning with a 55-tonne electric tractor-trailer, while the future range is planned to include tippers, fixed-body dumpers and buses from 7-metre to 18-metre sizes. JSW has invested about ₹2,500 crore in a 90-acre manufacturing facility at Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra, with an initial annual capacity of 15,000 buses and trucks. The move comes as India’s electric-CV market is beginning to expand: N3 electric-truck sales increased from about 850 units in FY26 to roughly 1,300 in the first five months of FY27, while electric CVs accounted for 5.2% of August 2026 CV retail sales, versus 2.1% a year earlier.

View: JSW Greentech’s entry could be slightly negative for Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland from a competitive perspective, particularly as electric commercial vehicles move from pilots toward larger fleet deployments. Tata currently has a strong position in e-CVs—it reported more than 3,400 e-CV orders across trucks, buses and small commercial vehicles in June 2026—while Ashok Leyland’s Switch Mobility is also active in electric buses and commercial vehicles. The impact, however, is likely to develop gradually because heavy electric trucks remain at an early stage in India.

Impact: Negative
