HDFC Bank has won all seven cases filed against it in Bahrain by investors in Credit Suisse AT1 bonds

News: As per media sources, HDFC Bank has won all seven cases filed against it in Bahrain by investors in Credit Suisse AT1 bonds, providing relief from allegations of mis-selling. The Bahrain High Civil Court passed favourable orders in the final two cases on September 9, after five similar cases were rejected during July-August. The court found insufficient admissible evidence to substantiate the claims or establish that investor losses were attributable to HDFC Bank, and ordered investors to bear proceeding costs. The disputes arose after Credit Suisse AT1 bonds were written down to zero during its UBS takeover in March 2023. Separately, India’s NCDRC had also ruled in HDFC Bank’s favour in related complaints in March 2026.

View: The favourable rulings remove a key legal overhang related to the Credit Suisse AT1 episode and support the bank’s position that it acted as a facilitator rather than guaranteeing investment outcomes. Importantly, the outcome reduces potential litigation and reputational risk at a time when HDFC Bank is already navigating broader governance and leadership-transition concerns.

Impact: Positive
