Garden Reach Shipbuilders Board has approved a capital budgetary outlay of ₹2,896 crore

News: Garden Reach Shipbuilders Board has approved a capital budgetary outlay of ₹2,896 crore for construction of a greenfield shipyard at Raichak, aimed at expanding the company’s shipbuilding capacity across both naval and commercial segments. The approval follows GRSE’s earlier announcement on August 24, 2026 regarding capacity expansion through three new facilities, including Raichak.

View: The Raichak shipyard marks a significant step-up in GRSE’s capacity expansion, with the facility expected to support growth across both naval and commercial shipbuilding. The investment should provide additional capacity to cater to the company’s long-term order pipeline while enabling greater participation in larger commercial vessels. The company is targeting an increase in concurrent shipbuilding capacity from 28 platforms currently to 32 by end-CY26. The company is also evaluating a larger long-term capacity ramp-up, with management previously indicating potential capacity of ~40 platforms by 2029. This expansion comes against a strong project pipeline, with projects on the lookout estimated at ~₹1.5 lakh crore (excluding the ~₹33,000 crore Next Generation Corvette programme). Raichak should therefore provide additional capacity to execute larger and more complex naval and commercial vessels, while supporting GRSE’s stated objective of expanding beyond its existing naval franchise

Impact: Positive
