Cochin Shipyard has approved the formation of a 50:50 JV with Drydocks World–Dubai

News: Cochin Shipyard has approved the formation of a 50:50 JV with Drydocks World–Dubai (a DP World company) to own and operate its International Ship Repair Facility (ISRF) at Willingdon Island, Kochi. The ISRF will be transferred to the JV for a consideration of not less than ₹1,800 crore, with 50% received in cash and the balance through shares in the JV. The facility can currently handle commercial and naval vessels of up to 130 metres and 6,000 tonnes, and the JV plans to add 10 workstations to expand capacity.

View: With the total capex of Rs 970 crore, CSL had commissioned the ISRF in August 2024. Under the proposed transaction, CSL is expected to receive ₹900 crore in cash while retaining a 50% stake in the JV, allowing it to participate in the future growth of the facility. The JV with Drydocks World would provide global ship-repair expertise and customer network to CSL. Though the facility generated revenue of only Rs 207 crore in FY26 (4.8% of total), the expansion plan to add 10 workstations in JV (currently 6 workstations) would create significant opportunities for CSL to expand its margin-accretive ship repair segment through an increase in participation in international markets.

Impact: Positive
