Coal India reported a slightly moderated production volume at 47.5 million tons

ICICIdirect Research 02 Sep 2026 DISCLAIMER

News: Coal India reported a slightly moderated production volume at 47.5 million tons (MT) in August’26 with YTDFY27 volume reaching ~268 MT, down ~5% YoY. Similarly, offtake volume for the month stood at 60.6 MT (up 5.5% YoY), with sales volume reaching ~323 MT, growth of 6.7% YoY in the same period. Moreover, ~21.1 MT of coal was offered under the E-auction route in August’26, of which ~39% i.e. ~8.3 MT was allocated at premium exceeding 59% of over notified price in the month.

View: Coal India witnessed moderation in production volumes due to high rainfall in key mining belts and the gap between production and offtake was met by drawing down inventories. This will supports growth for the company in the quarter. On the e-auction front, allocation volumes edged up to 39% from 33% in July'26 and premiums saw robust growth from 41% to 59%. Additionally, the company is executing a major strategic diversification in the form of ₹50,000-crore investment in coal gasification across three projects, targeting 9.5 GW of renewable energy by FY30 and acquiring critical mineral assets across lithium and graphite. Overall, we remain constructive on the company as it undertakes strategic positional shift from a pure-play coal miner to diversified energy and minerals player, supported by its robust net cash balance sheet and an attractive dividend yield of ~6%.
