News: As per media sources, a group of ~70 investors has raised complaints regarding HDFC Bank’s distribution of the Luxembourg Life Fund managed by Carlisle Asset Management through its UAE/Bahrain operations during 2017-19. The group claims exposure of ~$12.5 million (~₹118 crore), while the overall amount allegedly mobilised from HDFC Bank customers is estimated at ~$100 million (~₹940 crore). Investors allege that the product was marketed with high historical/expected returns, while redemptions have remained suspended since late 2020.

View: HDFC Bank has denied any mis-selling, stating that it only facilitated investments in a third-party fund, which was operating in a recognised jurisdiction and had an established performance/redemption track record at the time. The development adds to the recent governance/reputational overhang as it involves questions around product suitability, disclosures and oversight of products distributed through overseas branches. The key monitorable would be whether investor complaints translate into any regulatory scrutiny or liability for the bank.

Impact: Negative
