The Bombay Stock Exchange is Asia’s oldest stock exchange. It was established in 1875 by cotton merchant PremchandRoychand, a Jain businessman. It is located on Dalal Street in Mumbai. For the quarter ended June 2022, BSE Ltd. reported standalone quarterly net sales of Rs 141.72 crore, down 5.13% from Rs 149.39 crore reported in June 2021. Its market capitalisation on 8 August 2022 stood at Rs 8,761 crore. 

The company is listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange with the code 538397, and on the National Stock Exchange with the code BSE.  

The Bombay Stock Exchange was the first Indian exchange to receive permanent recognition under the Securities Contract Regulation Act, 1956. It facilitates efficient and transparent trading of debt instruments, currencies, mutual funds, derivatives, and equities. It is the fastest stock exchange in the world, with a speed of 6 microseconds. In 2017, BSE launched India INX, the country’s first international exchange, headquartered at GIFT CITY IFSC in Ahmedabad.  

During FY 2021-2022, the exchange generated a total revenue of Rs 863.53 crore, up 31.91% from the previous financial year, 2020-2021. The profit after tax for FY 2021-2022 was Rs 254.33 crore.  

On 30 June 2022, 61.81% stake of the company belonged to the public, 11.02% to foreign institutional investors, and 1.02% to domestic institutional investors. Mutual fund holdings were 0.48%.
