News: NTPC - Maharashtra State Power genco consortium to acquire Sinnar thermal power plant (STPP) that has 1350 (5x270MW). STPP was developed by Indiabulls Power and later on acquired by RattanIndia Power. STPP faced the challenge of coal supply and commercial viability (no PPA) due to which it was undergoing solvency proceedings. The power plant has debt of ~₹15900 crore and only one unit is operational.
View: NTPC-Mahagenco was the highest bidder for STPP with ~₹3800 crore offer. STPP has an additional 1600 acres of land providing the potential to expand. NTPC consortium will leverage existing coal and logistics infrastructure via koradi plants thus solving challenges faced by STPP. Winning the bid for STPP will accelerate capacity addition for NTPC on both existing and new power plant at STPP site.
Impact: Positive
