News: As per media sources, Bank of Baroda has notified a cyber insurance claim following an alleged data breach that reportedly exposed nearly 1 terabyte of customer information on the darknet. The bank has informed lead insurer National Insurance under its cyber insurance programme carrying total cover of around ₹750 crore, with the loss limit reportedly at around ₹300 crore. The bank stated that the incident originated from a compromised employee email account, while its core banking systems remained secure. Forensic investigations are underway to determine the extent and source of the breach, with the eventual insurance payout dependent on financial losses, business disruption, regulatory action and third-party liabilities. The incident could also entail forensic, legal and customer remediation costs, besides potential regulatory scrutiny.

View: While the reported data breach raises concerns around cybersecurity and could entail remediation, regulatory and customer-related costs, the financial impact is expected to remain manageable given the bank’s ~₹750 crore cyber insurance cover. With core banking systems remaining unaffected, the incident is unlikely to materially impact operations; however, the extent of data compromised, regulatory outcome and insurance recoverability remain key monitorables.

Impact: Neutral
