Holidays Falling on Weekends in 2026

The stock exchanges are generally closed on Saturdays and Sundays. Consequently, holidays that fall on these days do not result in additional market closures. For the year 2026, the following major festivals occur on weekends:

  • Mahashivratri: February 15, 2026 (Sunday)
  • Id-Ul-Fitr (Ramadan Eid): March 21, 2026 (Saturday)
  • Independence Day: August 15, 2026 (Saturday)
  • Diwali Laxmi Pujan: November 08, 2026 (Sunday)

Muhurat Trading: A Special Session

A notable exception to the Sunday closure rule is the Muhurat Trading session. This symbolic one-hour trading session is held every year on the occasion of Diwali Laxmi Pujan to mark the beginning of the new financial year (Samvat).

  • Date: Sunday, November 08, 2026.
  • Significance: It is considered auspicious for investors to make token investments during this hour.
  • Timings: The specific time window (usually in the evening) will be notified by the exchanges subsequently.

FAQs on Share Market Holidays

Is the stock market closed on January 1, 2026 (New Year's Day)?

No, the equity markets (BSE and NSE) are open on 1 January 2026. Unless this day falls on a weekend, New Year's Day is a trading day for the equity segment.

Are the holidays the same for the Commodity Market (MCX)?

While major holidays like Republic Day and Good Friday are shared, the commodity market (MCX) often operates in the evening session (5:00 PM onwards) on certain religious holidays where the equity market is fully closed.

Can I place orders during a market holiday?

You cannot execute trades while the market is closed. However, most brokerage platforms allow you to place AMO (After Market Orders). These orders are stored in the system and sent to the exchange for execution when the market opens on the next trading day.

Are NSE and BSE holidays usually the same for equity trading?

For 2026, the published holiday schedules for equity and equity derivatives indicate the same set of weekday trading holidays on NSE and BSE.

What happens to orders on a trading holiday?

Orders cannot execute during a market closure. If your broker supports after-market instructions, the order may be routed on the next trading day, subject to prevailing market conditions at reopening.

Can exchanges revise the holiday list after publication?

Yes. The published notices indicate that the exchange may alter/change holidays and would issue a separate communication in advance if changes are made.
