Why is there a difference in Profit and Loss in my Portfolio and Profit & Loss Statement?

The Portfolio page displays Profit and Loss of the client’s holdings under Holdings Duration. Holdings are classified under 4 categories in Portfolio – Holdings, Zero Holdings, Negative Holdings and All.

Whereas, Profit and Loss Statement displays the profit and loss of all the holdings in the client’s portfolio. Portfolio page displays only holdings of the client by default.

By clicking on ‘All’ option under Holdings Duration, the P&L in Portfolio page and Profit and Loss Statement will match.

What are the reasons behind a mismatch in Portfolio and Portfolio Beta?

A mismatch between Portfolio and Portfolio Beta can occur due to the following reasons:

    Off-market Transactions:

If you have bought shares through a different broker, the transaction price updated in Portfolio Beta reflects the closing price of the stock as on the date of transfer to ICICI Direct. Since these off-market transactions are not automatically updated in the Portfolio, there might be a mismatch in the quantity of that stock.

    Corporate Actions:

In the case of corporate actions like mergers, demergers, or capital reductions, the "Portfolio" is not updated automatically, whereas "Portfolio Beta" reflects these changes. This can cause a discrepancy in the quantity of shares displayed.

    Manual Entries:

If you have manually updated your Portfolio with entries for transactions not executed through ICICI Direct, there could be a mismatch between Portfolio and Portfolio Beta.

    How to resolve this:

On the Portfolio page, you can manually add or modify the purchase/sale rate and transaction date. Follow these steps:

    • Go to Portfolio.

    • Under the Actions column, click on the edit icon for the relevant stock.

    • Click on Transaction History.

    • Select the checkbox under the Edit column to update the rate and date.

    What is Portfolio Beta?

Portfolio Beta is an updated version of Portfolio. The additional features provided in Portfolio Beta are as follows:

    • Corporate actions are automatically updated

Impact of Corporate actions like Split, Bonus, Merger/De-merger, Rights Issue, etc. are auto-updated in Portfolio Beta.

    • Dividend History can be tracked

You will be able to track the amount of dividend received since the purchase date of your 1st transaction.

    • Off-market transactions are automatically updated

Shares which were bought/sold on a different platform which have been transferred to ICICI Direct are off-market transactions. Such transactions will be auto-updated based on the closing price as on transfer date. You can edit the purchase price and date for these transactions

How is Portfolio Beta different from Portfolio?
    Portfolio Portfolio Beta
Impact of split and bonus are auto-updated in Portfolio. Merger and de-merger entries have to be manually entered by the client. Impact of Corporate actions like Split, Bonus, Merger/De-merger, Rights Issue, etc. are auto-updated.
Off-market transactions have to be manually updated by the client. (Read: How do I add shares manually? How can I update off-market transactions?) Off-market transactions will be auto-updated based on the closing price as on transfer date. You can edit the purchase price and date for such transactions.
Calculation of Net Worth, Capital Gain, etc. is done based on Portfolio. Portfolio Beta is not used for calculation of Net Worth, Capital Gain, etc.
What is the difference between Portfolio Beta and Demat Holdings?
      Portfolio Beta Demat Holdings
Purpose You can view the current realised and unrealised P&L and annualised returns of your stocks on portfolio You can view your current holdings in Demat account
Corporate actions It displays the shares you have received due to corporate actions such as Splits, Rights issue, Bonus shares. You can also view dividend history. Dividends and benefits are automatically credited to the linked bank/demat account.
Off-market transactions Any off-market transfer / credit of shares will automatically get updated in Portfolio Beta by considering the date of transfer as purchase / sale date and closing price as the price of such transaction.  Editing in the total quantity displayed in demat holdings is not allowed
By when the stocks start reflecting on this section Any new purchase will reflect in portfolio from next day morning onwards.  You can see the stocks in Demat holding by evening on T+1 day.
What are Holdings, Negative Holdings and Zero Holdings?

Holdings – Holdings are assets shares that an investor buys and holds in their investment portfolio.

Zero Holdings – When a client sells all the quantity of shares that they hold, those stocks are shown under Zero Holdings in Portfolio and Portfolio Beta.

Negative Holdings– When a client has a sell entry for a particular stock for which there is no corresponding buy entry, the holdings are classified as Negative Holdings. This applies in case of off-market transactions.

When I go to Portfolio Beta page, the below nudge is displayed: ‘There are stocks in your portfolio for which you can update the purchase details.’ What does it indicate?

If you have transferred shares bought from another broker to your ICICI Direct demat account, the purchase price that is automatically taken for these shares is the closing price of the shares on the date of transfer. This purchase price can be manually edited by the client through the nudge.

On the nudge, by clicking on ‘Click Here’, a pop-up is displayed which allows you to edit the purchase price and date of the shares.

The below nudge is displayed when I go to Portfolio Beta page: ‘There is a mismatch of quantities in 5 stocks of your portfolio’ Why am I shown this nudge in Portfolio Beta page? What does it indicate?

In some cases, the quantity of shares in Portfolio Beta and Demat Holdings may not match. There could be a few reasons for the same.

    1. It could be that due to an error, the shares have been updated in Demat Holdings but take around 2 days to reflect in Portfolio Beta. In this case, the nudge is shown. The mismatch will automatically be fixed by the system.

    2. In case of shares bought through another broker that have been transferred to your ICICI Direct demat account, the quantity of such shares may not be updated in Portfolio Beta due to technical glitches. The nudge is shown in such case. The mismatch will automatically be fixed by the system.

I have bought/sold shares. When will it reflect on the Portfolio page?

Shares bought/sold today will reflect on Portfolio and Portfolio Beta page the next morning onwards.

Why are my MTF shares not shown in Demat Holdings on ICICI Direct?

Shares purchased under the Margin Trading Facility (MTF) must be pledged as per exchange regulations. These shares are credited to your demat account under a pledged status.

The "Demat Holdings" section on ICICI Direct only displays shares that are freely available in your demat account. Since MTF shares are pledged, they do not appear under "Demat Holdings."

However, to provide a comprehensive view of your investments, MTF holdings are displayed under the "Portfolio" section. This ensures you have a complete picture of your holdings, including pledged shares. Your MTF positions are also displayed in the MTF section in "Open positions" page.

You can view your MTF positions through the following paths:

    1. On Portfolio page

Click on Stocks tab -> Go to Portfolio

    2. On Open positions page

Click on Stocks tab -> Go to Open Positions -> Click on MTF (Pay Later) tab

How do I add shares to my Portfolio? How can I transfer shares bought on another broking platform to my ICICI Direct demat account?

Go to Portfolio -> Click on Advance Options -> Upload New Transaction

Why is there a sudden drop in the P&L on my shares in Portfolio?

During a bonus share issue for a stock you hold in Portfolio, there could be a sudden drop observed in P&L.

When bonus shares are issued by a company, the investment value of the stock remains unchanged. Additional shares will be credited to the customer’s account by a certain date. Until then, the portfolio will show a temporary drop in P&L. Once bonus shares are credited, the P&L will adjust to its correct value.

How is the calculation of Profit and Loss done in the Portfolio?

The calculation of realized and unrealized profit is done differently for Trader and Investor profiles.

For trader, Equity Portfolio calculation is done based on First In First Out (FIFO) method for both Intraday or Delivery transactions.

For Investor, Equity Portfolio calculation is done based on FIFO method after all Intraday transactions are settled. i.e First all intraday transactions are settled and then the balance transactions are calculated on FIFO basis.

Why is the quantity of shares in my Demat account not matching the quantity in my Portfolio?

The shares displayed in your Demat account and your Portfolio may not match due to the following reasons:

    Transactions Outside ICICI Direct:

If you have carried out transactions on another platform and transferred those stocks directly into your Demat account without updating the transaction details in Portfolio, the quantity may not match.

    How to update manually:

You can add the missing transactions on the Portfolio page using any of the following methods:

    • Through Advance Options: Go to Portfolio → Click on Advance Options → Select Add New Transaction Manual → Add your transactions.

    • Through Transaction History: Go to Portfolio → Under the Actions column, click on the edit icon for the stock → Click on Transaction History → Select Add Transaction.

    • Through File Upload: If you have multiple entries to update, you can upload a file containing the transaction details: Go to Portfolio → Click on Advance Options → Select Upload New Transaction.

    IPO Allotment Outside ICICI Direct:

If you have been allotted shares through an IPO that was not applied via ICICI Direct, you need to manually update those shares in your Portfolio.

    Corporate Actions:

In case of corporate action like demerger, the Demat holdings may get updated, but the Portfolio might not reflect these changes automatically. This can lead to a mismatch between the two.

Can I manually add and edit entries on Portfolio?

Yes, manual addition and modification of entries is allowed on the Portfolio page.

    Please Note:

    • Verify that any additions made to your portfolio, for which payments have been remitted, are accurately reflected in your demat account.
    • Exercise caution and diligence when manually adding entries to your portfolio that are not backed by actual holdings in your demat account.
    • Periodically cross-check your actual holdings by referring to your demat statement under the demat section of your ICICI Bank account.
    • Your trading account is secured with two-factor authentication, ensuring that only you can make updates or changes.

To ensure continued security of your trading account, we reiterate that you keep your login credentials confidential and avoid sharing them. ICICI Securities never requires customers to share their login credentials (such as password, OTP or PIN) with anyone.

Will my manual entries have an impact on my Capital gains or P&L statement?

Any manual changes made to this page will impact the Equity Capital Gain / Profit & Loss statement appearing on this page.

What is the difference between Portfolio page and Demat Holdings page?

In new Portfolio (Portfolio Beta), all corporate actions such as Split/ Bonus/ Merger/ Demerger/ Capital Reduction etc. are automatically updated.
How is the average price of stocks determined in Portfolio as per FIFO method?

The price of stocks is determined based on the FIFO (First In First Out) method in Portfolio. The FIFO method is applicable in Cash (Delivery) segment and MTF. In case of Intraday, since the shares are bought and sold on the same day, the position is squared immediately.

The FIFO method assumes that the stocks that were purchased first are sold first. Consequently, the stocks that are purchased later are sold later.

    Example:

Mr. A purchased shares of TATAMOTORS on the following dates:

    Average Price = 4750/300 = 15.83333

Now, suppose Mr. A performs a sell transaction as follows:

The calculation of the average price of the remaining shares in Portfolio as per FIFO is shown in the table below:

    Now, the average price = 3300/170 = 19.41176

Can I see the details of the stock that I held in the past but do not hold today?

Yes, the details and the transaction history of the stock that you once held in the portfolio but don’t have as on day can be viewed under the “Zero Holdings” section under the “Holdings” section.

How is the computation of “Qty held for more than 1 year” done?

Computation of “Qty held for more than 1 year” is done on the basis of entries in the Equity Portfolio. The entries from the trade book or demat account are not considered.

Why are the demerger shares I received reflecting under my Demat Holdings but not in my Portfolio?

If the demerger shares are visible under your Demat Holdings but not in your Portfolio, you need to manually add the demerger entry[AP1]  to your ICICI Direct portfolio.

Why have I not received split or bonus shares in my Portfolio?

Bonus shares credited into demat account after March 21, 2012 and split shares received after May 17, 2012 are automatically updated in the portfolio.

If the split or bonus shares don’t reflect in your portfolio, follow the steps below:

How are intraday transactions (Buy/Sell) treated in Capital Gains?

If a stock is bought and sold on the same day, the transaction is classified as Speculative Income in the Capital Gains statement — regardless of the order type (Intraday / MTF / Delivery).

Why am I not able to add shares in my Portfolio?

You may not be able to add shares in Portfolio due to the following reasons:

    Unallocated shares in Demat

If you have shares in Demat from an offline transfer or have received shares through corporate actions, verify if the shares are allocated in Demat. If the shares are unallocated, first you need to manually allocate these shares by following the steps mentioned below:

    1. Click on Stocks

    2. Go to Demat Holdings

    3. Click on Allocate

    4. Select the stock. Click on the Allocate button

    5. Enter the quantity to allocate under Free Qty. column.

    6. Click on Submit.

Quantity entered is greater than the Demat qty.

As Demat Holdings provides an accurate picture of your total holdings in any stock, the quantity of a stock in your Portfolio should either be equal to or lesser than the quantity of your Demat Holdings.

If you attempt to enter a quantity of a stock in your Portfolio that exceeds the total Allocated quantity of that stock present in Demat, then you will be unable to add do such an entry manually.

All you need to know about the Bajaj Finance Limited Stock Split and Bonus Share Issue

Bajaj Finance Ltd., a leading non-banking financial company (NBFC) in India, announced a 4:1 bonus issue and stock split from face value Rs. 2 to Rs. 1. The record date for the stock split and bonus issue is 16th June, 2025.

    Stock Split

A stock split divides each share into two, reducing the face value from ₹2 to ₹1. For example:

If you have 10 shares, the split doubles them to 10 × 2 = 20 shares.

    Bonus Issue

A 4:1 bonus issue means shareholders receive 4 additional shares for every 1 share held. For example:

If you own 10 shares, you get 40 bonus shares.

    Total shares post-bonus: 10 + 40 = 50 shares.

    Combined Effect

The bonus and split together multiply your shares by 10:

    Start with 1 share → Split gives 2 shares → Bonus gives 2 × 5 = 10 shares.

If you have 10 shares in your portfolio, post bonus and split, your portfolio will reflect 100 shares. (10 × 2 × 5)

    Impact on Portfolio

When bonus shares are issued by the company, the total invested value of the stock remains unchanged. In case of bonus shares issues by Bajaj Finance Limited, additional shares will be credited to the customer’s account within 2 weeks from the record date. Stock price will fall by 1/10th thereby impacting your holdings value. Until then, the portfolio will show a temporary drop in P&L. Once bonus shares are credited, the P&L will adjust to its correct value.

    Impact on Shares as Margin

    1. There will be an increase in the haircut percentage which will impact margin generated. The increase in haircut percentage will lower the margin generated initially thereby requiring additional margin for open position in MTF/F&O/Commodity to maintain positions.

    2. The haircut percentage of Bajaj Finance Limited (BAJFI) in Shares as Margin will be increased as follows: 50% on June 9, 99% on June 10 and 100% on Jun 12, 2025 EOD.

Impact on Margin Trading Facility (MTF)

If you hold Bajaj Finance Limited (BAJFI) shares in MTF, you will have to convert those shares to delivery by 12:30 PM on 13th June, 2025. All MTF positions that are held after this timeframe will be automatically squared off.

    Impact on Futures and Options

Strike Price: The adjusted strike price will be arrived at by dividing the old strike price by the adjustment factor i.e., 10.

Lot Size: The adjusted lot size will be arrived at by multiplying the old market lot by the adjustment factor.

    Old lot size=125

    Adjustment factor = 10

    New lot size = 125×10 = 1250

Note: The lot size for the contracts expiring 31st July onwards will change from 75 to 750 as per the NSE/FAOP67372.

    Adjustments Formula Example
Strike Price New Strike Price = Old Strike Price/ 10

    Old strike price = 9800
    New strike price = 980

Lot Size New lot size = Old lot size × 10

Old lot size = 125 (June contracts)
    New lot size = 1250

Option Premium New premium= Old premium/10

    Old premium = 1500
    New premium = 150

    Value of Position:

    Pre-bonus Value of Options: ₹1500 (premium) × 125 (shares) = ₹187,500

    Post-bonus Value of Options: ₹150 (premium) × 1250 (shares) = ₹187,500

Like Futures, the notional value of your Options position remains the same at ₹187,500.

You can calculate the new future price as follow:

= (Closing price / Adjustment factor) × New lot size

    = (Closing price / 10) × 1250

Key consideration – There will be no change in your overall exposure or margin requirement. The price decreases and the lot size increase, keeping the contract value constant.

*It is important to note that the prices quoted are as a part of example and do not reflect the market data.

Margin Advisory: Please monitor your positions and ensure adequate margin to avoid square-off.

    4) Impact on Futures & Options (F&O)

    Futures Contracts:

Formula = (Closing Price ÷ Adjustment Factor) × New Lot Size

    Example = (Closing Price ÷ 2) × 1100

    Options Contracts (Adjustments):

    Parameter Formula Example
    Strike Price New = Old ÷ 2 Old: 2020 → New: 1010
    Lot Size New = Old × 2 Old: 550 → New: 1100
    Premium New = Old ÷ 2 Old: 8 → New: 4

Note: The overall position value remains unaffected. Only parameters (strike price, lot size, premium) are adjusted. With increased lot size, partial exits are also possible.
