India Sends Letter of Request for 114 Rafale Fighter Aircraft

According to media sources, India has issued a Letter of Request (LoR) to France for the procurement of 114 Rafale fighter aircraft under a government-to-government deal estimated at approximately ₹3.25 lakh crore.

The proposed program envisages the manufacturing of 94 aircraft in India with around 50% localisation. This would mark the first time Rafale fighter jets are produced outside France.

Effect of proposed deal

The proposed Rafale program is expected to significantly strengthen the domestic aerospace manufacturing ecosystem.

The program could create opportunities across:

  • Aircraft structures
  • Avionics
  • Electronics
  • Systems integration
  • Lifecycle support

The initiative is also expected to help address the Indian Air Force's fighter squadron requirements over the long term.

One of the Largest Aerospace Manufacturing Opportunities for the Defence Industry

The proposed Rafale program could emerge as one of the largest aerospace manufacturing opportunities for the Indian defence industry over the next decade.

Companies with established aerospace manufacturing and defence electronics capabilities are likely to benefit from localisation opportunities across:

  • Aerostructures
  • Avionics
  • Electronic systems
  • Precision components
  • Weapons
  • Special materials

Defence Companies That Could Benefit

Companies that could potentially benefit from localisation opportunities include:

  • Hindustan Aeronautics
  • Bharat Electronics
  • Bharat Dynamics
  • Dynamatic Technologies
  • Azad Engineering
  • Data Patterns
  • Astra Microwave Products
  • Mishra Dhatu Nigam

Key Factors That Will Determine the Opportunity Size

The final opportunity size for individual companies will depend on several factors, including:

  • Dassault's choice of Indian manufacturing partner
  • Localisation strategy adopted for the program
  • Supply-chain allocation during the execution phase

While the proposed program presents a significant opportunity for India's defence manufacturing ecosystem, the eventual benefits for individual companies will depend on how the project is structured and executed.
