The European Commission has unveiled new safeguard measures to curb steel imports

ICICIdirect Research 01 Jul 2026 DISCLAIMER

News: As per media sources, the European Commission has unveiled new safeguard measures to curb steel imports by reducing annual tariff-free import quotas by 47% to 18.3 million tonnes. Imports exceeding the quota will attract a 50% tariff across 26 categories of steel products. The revised measures aim to protect the European steel industry from rising imports and will significantly tighten market access for exporters to the European Union.

View: The measure is aimed at improving capacity utilisation and profitability of European steel producers by curbing low-cost steel imports. The development is also positive for Tata Steel, which operates a ~7 MTPA steel plant in the Netherlands, as tighter import restrictions could support steel prices and improve market conditions in Europe. We continue to remain positive on Tata Steel, driven by its strategic capacity expansions, restructuring of its European operations, and continued focus on cost optimisation.

Impact: Positive
