News: NTPC Limited has begun installing 5 GWh (5,000 MWh) of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) at its coal-fired power plants with an investment of around ₹5,000 crore to reduce renewable energy curtailment. The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has approved a cost-plus tariff framework, allowing NTPC to recover fixed charges and returns while storing excess solar and wind power. NTPC Green Energy reported 314 million units of renewable curtailment and 135 million units of transmission losses, with grid-related curtailment impacting earnings by around ₹90 crore.

View: The project implies a capital cost of ~₹1 crore per MWh of storage capacity (₹5,000 crore for 5,000 MWh). It is supportive for companies involved in battery storage, power electronics, energy management systems, EPC and grid integration, while also improving renewable energy utilization and grid stability.

Impact: Positive
