News: As per exchange filings, Kotak Mahindra Bank has signed a business transfer agreement to acquire Deutsche Bank’s retail banking, private banking and wealth management business in India on a slump sale basis, subject to regulatory approvals. The acquired business comprises advances of approximately ₹29,000 crore, deposits of ₹16,000 crore and assets under management of ₹10,500 crore, serving around 1.5 lakh customers through nearly 1,000 employees. Kotak will pay a cash consideration of approximately ₹281.7 crore, with the transaction expected to be completed by September 2027

View: We view Kotak Mahindra Bank’s acquisition of Deutsche Bank India’s retail banking business as strategically positive, albeit not transformational from a balance sheet perspective. While the acquired portfolio represents only ~5% of Kotak’s advances and ~3% of its deposits, it provides access to a high-quality affluent customer base and strengthens the bank’s private banking and wealth management franchise. The transaction is expected to be ROE accretive and should support long-term cross-selling opportunities across banking, wealth and investment products

Impact: Positive
