India's passenger vehicle makers are aggressively reducing discounts on entry-level cars

News: According to media sources, India’s passenger vehicle makers are aggressively reducing discounts on entry-level cars as demand improves after the recent GST cut, signaling stronger recovery in the mass-market segment. Maruti Suzuki India Limited cut discounts on the WagonR to ₹10,000 in June from ₹31,000 in May, while discounts on the Baleno were reduced to ₹21,000 from ₹31,000. Tata Motors Limited has withdrawn incentives on Tiago and Punch after offering discounts of ₹19,000 and ₹26,000 respectively in May, while Hyundai Motor India Limited has also reduced discounts on the Grand i10 Nios. The move reflects improving affordability and stronger consumer demand in the entry-level car segment.

View: The sharp reduction in discounts — described as the steepest post-Covid correction — suggests automakers are regaining pricing power as demand revives, which could directly support margin improvement for OEMs and dealers. Entry-level car market share, which had fallen from 46% in FY19 to 23% currently, is showing early signs of stabilization after the GST cut improved affordability. This trend is positive for Maruti Suzuki & Tata Motors PV.

Impact: Positive
