BPCL or Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd is a pioneer company in the Oil & Gas sector incorporated in the year 1952. The first drive-through fuel station in India was built in 1928 and has continued to grow since then. The BPCL fuel stations fuels 1 crore vehicles on a daily basis.
BPCL or Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd was incorporated on 3rd November 1952 under the name of Burmah Shell Refineries Limited, a private limited company. In 1976, the company was nationalized and later renamed Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd in the year 1977. BPCL currently operates out of 4 refineries located in Mumbai, Kochi, Bina, and Numaligarh. BPCL has split its operations into 7 SBU’s as Retail, Lubricants, Aviation, Refinery, Gas, I&C, and LPG. BPCL has also entered into multiple joint ventures with GAIL, ONGC, IOC, etc., to form companies like Indraprastha Gas Limited, Petronet LNG, etc. On 21st November’2019, the Government of India approved the privatization of BPCL by inviting bids for a 52.98% stake in the company. The promoters of the company currently hold 52.98% of the stake in the company while the Foreign Institutional Investors (FII) and Domestic Institutional Investors (DII) hold 14.21% and 23.07% of the stake, respectively and the balance 9.74%, is owned by others. In the Fortune list of 2023, BPCL ranked 233 in the world’s biggest corporations.
In FY 2022-2023, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd recorded the annual revenue at Rs. 5.5 trillion making it the sixth largest company across all categories in India as per turnover. Also in the year 2023, Bharat Petroleum Corporation announced a divided of Rs. 4 per share. As on March 2023, profit after tax stood at Rs. 1870.10 crores.
