The company was incorporated in 1948 as Ashok Motors, and in 1955, it became Ashok Leyland. The consolidated total income recorded in March 2022 was Rs. 9,957.95 crore. This was higher than the previous quarter by 49.16%. The company has a market capitalisation worth Rs. 38,264 crore as of 20 May, 2022.

The company is involved in the manufacturing and sale of passenger, commercial, and defence vehicles, and power solutions. The product catalogue includes light, medium, and heavy commercial vehicles, such as lorries, vans, over-the-road tractors for semitrailers, haulage, and trippers. Its range of power solution systems includes industrial engines, agricultural engines, marine engines, and diesel generators. It provides buses for school, college, intercity, and city transportation.
The owner of the company is the Hinduja Group. The present management includes Mr Dheeraj G Hinduja as the chairman, Mr Vipin Sondhi as the managing director & CEO, Gopal Mahadevan as the wholetime director & CFO, Mr Anuj Kathuria as the chief operating officer, and Mr Nitin Seth as the chief operating officer.
