Market hits fresh life highs, Nifty above 21,750 mark

The domestic equity benchmarks traded with decent gains and hit the day�s high in mid-afternoon trade. The Nifty traded above the 21,750 mark after hitting the day�s low of 21,684.05 in morning trade. Oil & gas shares advanced after declining in the past trading session.

At 14:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, was up 152.95 points or 0.22% to 72,398.28. The Nifty 50 index added 60.95 points or 0.28% to 21,792.35.

The benchmarks, Nifty50 and Sensex hit a fresh all-time high of 21,831.65 and 72,519.67 respectively.

The broader market outperformed the headline indices. The S&P BSE Mid-Cap index rose 0.82% and the S&P BSE Small-Cap index gained 0.95%.

The market breadth was strong. On the BSE, 2,662 shares rose and 1,203 shares fell. A total of 154 shares were unchanged.

Buzzing Index:

The Nifty Oil & Gas gained 1.09% to 9,599.40. The index declined 0.97% in the past trading session.

Castrol India (up 7.65%), Gujarat State Petronet (up 4.98%), Gujarat Gas (up 4.75%), GAIL (India) (up 2.65%), Petronet LNG (up 1.75%), Adani Total Gas (up 1.52%), Oil India (up 1.29%), Mahanagar Gas (up 1.24%), Indraprastha Gas (up 0.94%) and Indian Oil Corporation (up 0.65%) edged higher.

Numbers to Track:

The yield on India`s 10-year benchmark federal paper rose 0.20% to 7.195 as compared with previous close 7.176.

In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged lower against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 83.2175, compared with its close of 83.1650 during the previous trading session.

MCX Gold futures for 5 February 2024 settlement rose 0.18% to Rs 63,314.

The US Dollar index (DXY), which tracks the greenback`s value against a basket of currencies, was up 0.05% to 101.18.

The United States 10-year bond yield rose 0.16% to 3.866.

In the commodities market, Brent crude for March 2024 settlement loss 0.25 cent or 0.32% to $77.04 a barrel.
