Pharma/agrochem thrive on incremental fluorine applications

ICICIdirect Research 04 Mar 2022 DISCLAIMER

Buzzing:

Pharma and agrochem players, besides some other specialty chemicals players, are increasingly inducting fluorination chemistry as a preferred application to better exploit key fluorine properties such as tight bonding with carbon, reactiveness to all elements, enhancing of drug efficacy by increasing metabolic stability, etc.

Context:

The fluorine molecule market size is estimated to be $16.9 billion in 2016 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.2% to $26.7 billion by 2025. Navin Fluorine and SRF being key players in complex fluorine chemistry are well poised to gain in export markets owing to better cost dynamics, product quality and proficiency of conducting lower stages of speciality fluorine chemistries (F-4/F-6).

Our Perspective:

Currently, ~20% of new pharmaceuticals entering the market possess fluorine atoms within their structures. Similarly, around 126 fluoro-agrochemicals account for 53% of all active agrochemical ingredients registrations in the agrochemical space. With a rise in usage of fluorine molecule across aforementioned industries along with emerging industries such as polymers, the fluorine industry is set deliver linear growth. Navin Fluorine is present in both pharma, agrochem and is planning to enter polymers. Besides Navin, SRF is mainly into pharma and is building up CRAMs capabilities. Given both these players’ strong domain knowledge and vast experience of handling complex chemistries, they are likely to tap incremental CRAMs opportunities. This would eventually improve India’s share in the fluorine exports market, which is at a mere 3-4% at present.
