NSE shifts Bank Nifty monthly, quarterly contracts expiry day to Wednesdays

Published on Dec 29, 2023 11:59

The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has announced a significant modification to the expiry day for Bank Nifty monthly and quarterly contracts. Effective March 2024, these contracts will now reach expiry on Wednesdays, a departure from the longstanding tradition of expiring on Thursdays. Additionally, in instances where Wednesday is designated as a trading holiday, the expiry day will be brought forward to the previous trading day.

This update comes on the heels of a prior shift made by the NSE in July, when the Bank Nifty weekly expiry was adjusted to Wednesdays from Thursdays, while the monthly and quarterly expiries remained tethered to Thursdays. However, this latest revision signifies a unification of all expiries for Bank Nifty contracts onto Wednesdays.

Notably, the NSE has clarified that the expiry date of monthly contracts for January and February 2024 will remain unchanged, with the first Wednesday monthly expiry scheduled for 27 March 2024.

The revised schedule for the NSE`s F&O contracts expiry is as follows: Nifty Midcap Select on Monday, Nifty Financial Services on Tuesday, Bank Nifty on Wednesday, and Nifty 50 on Thursday.

Market participants and analysts are closely monitoring the industry`s response to this development, as it is expected to have profound implications for trading strategies and market dynamics. This adjustment to contract expiries underscores the NSE`s commitment to optimizing the functionality and efficiency of derivative trading within the Indian stock market.
